Pre-Conference: Rethinking Learning Pathways: How to Equip Students and Graduates for the Workforce of Tomorrow
**You will need to register to access the zoom: https://info.credly.com/webinar-rethinking-learning-pathways**

A recent survey of employers revealed that 59% of respondents are considering eliminating the requirement of a college degree in job specifications. And over the past year, LinkedIn recorded a 21% increase in U.S. job listings that focused on skills rather than traditional qualification requirements.  But how can the traditional college degree support this focus on skills over certification? Learning pathways need to be flexible, adjustable and personalized to support a multitude of career paths for students entering the workforce. In this table top talk we’ll explore

  • How higher education institutions can support the need for flexible pathways
  • How collaboration with workplaces can help inform learning pathways
  • How students can communicate and demonstrate their skills to future employers through digital credentials

[ON DEMAND] Pre-Conference Webinar: How can we open up the recognition of lifewide learning?
Based in part on my blog post "Recipes for recognizing diverse badges and micro-credentials", this is also known as Open Recognition 101.This session will explore how an "inclusive" taxonomy across a broad spectrum of formality helps open up the recognition of personalized, lifewide learning with a positive impact on lives and careers.
It's based on my experiences since discovering Open Badges in 2011, consulting work for organizations like eCampusOntario, Inter-American Development Bank, CSUDH and ITCILO and ongoing advocacy for Open Recognition across a number of communities of practice, including the Open Recognition Alliance and the ePIC confererence, the Open Recogniton Workgroup of the Open Skills Network, and Keep Badges Weird/Open Recognition is for Everybody.

[ON DEMAND] Pre-Conference: The Changing Digital Credential Landscape: Lessons from the Field Driven by Recent Research
To be addressed in this session:
  • Skills-based hiring momentum and “skillification” – bypassing credentials?
  • Need for employers and their HR/talent acquisition tech systems to adapt to account for richer skills information and digital credentials
  • Rise of intermediaries is one of many points supporting the need for collaboration/standards
  • Quality assurance bodies are still catching up with the boom in digital credentialing and badging
  • Various providers/institutions are at different places in their journey along a “microcredential maturity spectrum” … most of course are still exploring and piloting… but how do we move toward “institutionalization” ?
  • Advice for institutions getting started with badging and creating a framework
    • Metrics for success, alignment with institutional goals, tech requirements, etc.
  • Partnerships with Employers and community partners
  • Thinking Strategically about People, Outcomes, Governance, QA, Finance, etc. when issuing new microcredentials

PRE-CONFERENCE | Converging Roles: Credential Innovation for Collaborating Across Campus and Beyond
Description: Higher education is facing a growing demand for alternative pathways to careers and stackable learning options that capture, recognize, and validate learning outcomes. At the same time as we find ourselves presented with generational opportunities to service this demand, our internal silos of production pose one of the greatest challenges to meeting the growing and varied needs of learners. In this highly interactive workshop, we identify missed opportunities for internal collaborations, and ideate and distill the main challenges they face internally at their institutions in terms of advancing credential innovation, and then collaborate on potential solutions and work products. Participants will include representation from registrar offices, continuing and professional education practitioners, experts from digital credential vendors, government agencies, and more. Attendees can expect to take away empathy and appreciation for other campus stakeholders, and new understandings of their own capacities for change and ways in which they can collaborate across campus to augment institutional strategy for innovative credentialing efforts. This workshop will be used to inform the needs and conditions for the future creation and conceptualization of cross-institutional working groups; a true Convergence!

Table Talk - Learner Perspectives on Credentialing Student Workers on Workplace Skills
As a first-generation Latina pursuing a bachelor's in Physics with a minor in Leadership Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, I used to believe that a college title would be the main source of professional development and proof of my skills. However, my work-study job at the Registrar's Office has shown me otherwise. With the introduction of micro-credentials, I now have the opportunity to work on unique projects and earn badges that showcase my skills. This experience has taught me that professional growth requires me to expand my horizons to highlight the complementary nature of both practical experience and formal education.

Table Talk: A business model and technologies that support inclusive microcredential design
Recent reports suggest colleges should partner with organizations to co-design & co-value microcredentials. To do this, an institution’s microcredential vision, business model, and technologies must be in alignment with inclusive design. Clarkson University’s nascent microcredentialing program has seen early success designing microcredentials with partners that generate revenue. This session explores the vision, business model, and technologies with which we’re experimenting.

Table Talk: A Journey to Badges Begins with Collaboration
This session will share the journey of one undergraduate department that is developing 5-week, 1-hour micro-courses to focus on granular skills and specific competencies graduates need in the workforce. This talk will discuss ways to collaborate within departmental levels and with college leadership to advance (and get buy-in for) this educational endeavor to design for-credit micro-credentials within higher education. We will also highlight how these interdisciplinary courses can be stand-alone credits or stack into a 3-hour credit, which can then be translated into a digital badge with meta-data to showcase skills learned by the student. Ways to bundle these micro-courses so students can design their own additional learning experiences and expand their professional development skills will also be explained. -- LINK for shared file of notes and research on this topic: https://tinyurl.com/BADGE-SUMMIT-CU-COMM

Table Talk: Enhancing biology undergraduate students’ career skills, competencies, and opportunities through modular, micro-credentialed, research skills training @ The MCDB Skills Center
As careers in science continue to require specific and often niche skills and competencies for entry, we recognize the limited ability of current biology degree programs to offer opportunities for students to gain these skills. Our team has sought to bridge this gap between the science classroom and the careers students seek by building a laboratory skills training course known as The MCDB Skills Center. Here students are offered a long list of skills they have the ability to learn and the freedom to choose which skills they wish to gain. By connecting skills training to validated micro-credentials, students now have access to a space to specifically train themselves for the careers that they seek. For those unsure of their career path, we offer foundational research skills training and the opportunity for students new to science research to engage in independent and supported skills learning. Student feedback has revealed that students are growing in various aspects of their personal, contextual, and relational agency during their engagement with research skills training. We seek to continue developing the Skills Center and collaborating with other instructors here and at other universities to best understand how we can employ micro-credentialed skills training to best enhance student access to high impact science careers.

Table Talk: From CLR to LER: Making Badges & Credentials Actionable
Designed for K-12, higher education, and workforce, the interoperable LifeJourney Toolkit (complete with badge issuance and ingesting capabilities) promotes the user’s ability to move from education to work and from work to education.  The LifeJourney Toolkit pairs a comprehensive learner record (CLR) with an AI-powered wallet to provide users with an individual “Opportunity Fit” built from skills acquired, alignment to a user’s chosen pathways, leveling-up experiences available, and curation of real-time job opportunities.  The LifeJourney Toolkit tracks data at the granular level, providing individuals and systems alike with data necessary for critical professional and programmatic decisions.

Table Talk: How might Higher Education Credential Frontline and Immigrant Staff for Career Advancement?
It's time for higher education to think differently about career advancement for our frontline and immigrant staff members. The three biggest barriers for career advancement for immigrant workers are their immigration status, English profeciency, and our inability (largely) to evaluate and recognize credentials/licensing from other countries. It's long overdue that we address this issue and micro-credentials offer an exciting opportunity for us to do just that!

There are ways to design your credentials so that not only will your learners have a better understanding of their skills, but so will outside organizations. We’ll discuss the technical advances in digital credentials that make it easier for institutions to award credit, learners to curate their achievements, and employers to find great matches for what they need.

Deep Dive: From Badges and Micro-credentials to CLRs and LERS. How do they all fit together in the Higher Education puzzle?
Digital credentials in Higher Education are expressed in a variety of ways, via a variety of mediums, platforms, and renderings. Unfortunately, every institution uses different terms and definitions. What are the differences? Can badges, Micro-credentials, alternative credentials, CLRs, LERs  and traditional credentials all live together? AACRAO asserts that digital credentials, whether traditional or new are essentially the same entity but expressed along different points along a continuum. Using recent survey and focus group data from higher education, this session will explore how HE’s expression of digital credentials and the interconnections between them can be better understood and expressed.

Badgesplaining: Promoting Student Success in Higher Education with Digital Badges
This presentation explores the use of digital badges to address two key challenges in higher education: enrollment and student success. Saginaw Valley State University serves as a notable example, having secured a $1.2 million grant from the US Department of Education to recruit and retain rural students in Michigan. We will demonstrate how digital badges are being utilized in this program to motivate and track student progress from admissions to graduation. By implementing badges, students are encouraged to actively engage in educational activities, while institutions gain insights to monitor and enhance success. These badges create an interactive learning environment, rewarding students with tangible achievements and fostering personal growth. Additionally, they provide a comprehensive means to evaluate individual progress, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. The experiences of Saginaw Valley State University showcase the potential of digital badges, promoting inclusivity and meeting specific student needs. This presentation emphasizes the significance of digital badges in higher education, where they serve as powerful tools to motivate students and track their journey toward success. Leveraging badges, institutions can create a supportive atmosphere that enhances student outcomes and fosters continuous growth.

Badgesplaining: Story Centered Inclusive User Experience (IUX) Co-design: How might we co-design technologies with (not for) learners and earners!
How might we co-design learning and employment technologies --- digital credentials, LERs, digital wallets, learning, HR and recrutment systems --- for the lived experience of learning and work, inclusive of our intersectional identities and multiple pathways?
We start with story, elevating context expertise, and codesigning with the storymakers closest to the experience we are designing a technology or innovation for.
In this talk Kelly will share about story-centerd Inclusive User Experience (IUX) design cultivated in a culture of care for technological and socio-cultural innovation. She’ll share key design principles which guide her work, developed from over 20-years of experience co-designing with (not for) learners and workers, and in partnership with the communities in which they live, learn and work. Drawing from international case studies, Kelly will share tips and advice for codesigning with partners and community, and the emergent protocols necessary for story-centered, impactful and consent-based participatory social design research.

Closing Plenary | Unlocking the Power of Human Talent and Potential: A glimpse into Colorado’s Education and Workforce Transformation
In a rapidly changing economy characterized by globalization, advances in technology, and automation, learners are working to develop the skills needed to keep pace. These changes require our education and training systems to evolve to meet the changing needs of learners while strengthening connections to employers eager for skilled talent.

During this session hosted by the Colorado Workforce Development Council (CWDC), you will learn about the work happening across Colorado to strengthen the connections across education and work, prioritize equity and empower learners with their personal data to navigate the changing world of learning and work. Colorado leaders spotlight efforts to increase data access and transparency, learning and employment records,  micro credentialing and skills-based hiring to improve equitable outcomes for learning and work.

Goals:
  • Raise awareness and urgency around the need for ecosystem collaboration to meet the needs of learners and employers and improve equitable outcomes and connect the dots through work happening in Colorado
  • Position CWDC’s efforts with Advancing Career Determination project as a component of learner-centered systems transformation
    • LERs and digital wallets and their ability to increase individual ownership and control over their record of skills, achievements and credentials and personal data
    • Credential transparency
    • Talent finance to help people access needed training and upskilling
  • Stress the focus on skills as common “currency” in the ecosystem, need for credential transparency and need for learners to better articulate the breadth of their skills and talents and more efficiently connect with employers in need of talent

Post-Conference Workshop: Getting Weird with the Open Recognition Alliance
Join global leaders in digital badging and Open Recognition! Topics to include:
  • Badge Wiki User Research Clinic
    • We aim to help Badge Wiki improve as a tool for knowledge sharing within the Open Recognition ecosystem. The Badge Wiki User Research Clinic is a user research session that will look at experiences using Badge.wiki or another wiki-based knowledge repository. The session will cover the benefits of using a wiki-based knowledge repository, help people learn basic editing skills, and serve as an in-person place to recognise contribution to Badge.Wiki. Partipants can also earn badges!
  • How can we advance open recognition in the Americas?
    • Join us to explore how open recognition communities in the Americas may advance the cause of creating networks of stakeholders committed to recognizing and valuing learning wherever it occurs. In this session, we'll take a “deep dive” into open recognition—what it is, and what potential it offers—by exploring open recognition principles, available resources, and examples of communities and organizations who are working to open recognition to all.
  • An Open Recognition Tool Kit
    • The prompt for this Design Challenge is "How might we create an open recognition tool kit that will help communities and organizations begin to open their recognition practices?" Our design challenge agenda will be: 1) Ideate around what an open recognition tool kit should consist of, e.g., purpose, scope, and mode. 2) Identify existing, openly-licensed resources that can contribute to the tool kit.

Post-Conference Workshop: Last Mile to Hire Consumption Convening [*invite-only*]
This exciting post-conference conversation will occur at the Badge Summit at the University of Colorado Boulder on Wednesday, July 26. The Badge Summit has been a focal point for credentialing, and now we're shifting the conversation to how credential “acceptors” such as education providers, employers, Learning & Development, registrars, and others can utilize digital skills and credentials for organizational action to the benefit of those seeking opportunities.

We believe it's crucial to align the efforts of educational providers with the needs of employers. Without employers’ active involvement as “acceptors” of digital credentials, our efforts might fall short. That's why we're bringing issuers and receivers together for this convening of credentials consumers: to challenge and improve the credentialing ecosystem.

[ENCORE ON DEMAND] Badgesplaining: Promoting Student Success in Higher Education with Digital Badges

[ENCORE ON DEMAND] Badgesplaining: Story Centered Inclusive User Experience (IUX) Co-design: How might we co-design technologies with (not for) learners and earners!

[ENCORE ON DEMAND] Closing Plenary | Unlocking the Power of Human Talent and Potential: A glimpse into Colorado’s Education and Workforce Transformation

[ENCORE ON DEMAND] From Badges and Micro-credentials to CLRs and LERS.

Recognition can serve as a protective factor against the negative experiences that underrepresented minority students may face, such as stereotype threat and lack of representation. Building on my 2022 Badge Summit talk (Why Degrees Need to Go), I will discuss the important topic of why we need rapid and widespread adoption of skills-based hiring. We're seeing growing awareness by employers, government and the media that competency-based learning and skills-based hiring are important, but I am concerned that adoption is moving way too slowly, especially given that student loan debt is at $1.7 trillion and counting.

[ON DEMAND] Rethinking College Readiness: How human-centered design can help address information problems in college admissions
With the US Supreme Court’s decision on affirmative action in college admissions, higher education institutions committed to social justice and the educational value of diverse student bodies are under pressure to find new ways of recruiting and building diverse classes that fit within the boundaries of what is permitted by law. While much has been said about the inequality of formal learning and the difficulties this presents to equitable reform, little has been said in regards to informal learning experiences and the significance they play in college admissions. In this session, I discuss my part in designing a platform for credentialing informal learning experiences and how this platform can help us rethink college readiness. Informed by research with college admissions personnel, I discuss the role and value of informal learning in holistic college admissions and touch on the various information problems associated with interpreting information from informal environments. I then introduce and discuss prototypes of the platform to demonstrate how it centers the needs of people (e.g., students, families, and college admissions personnel) in its design.

Stackable Credentials: How KQED + PBS Identified Critical Skills Toward a Media Literacy Certification
Join Rik Panganiban, Manager of Online Learning and Educator Certification, Randy Depew, Managing Director of Education at KQED+PBS, and Kristen Franklin, Senior Program Manager at Digital Promise to discuss the impact of Media Literacy stackable credentials.

With the media landscape shifting with speed and frequency, KQED & PBS created a stack of 8 micro-credentials about learners’ role as media consumers and creators. Once an educator has earned the full stack, they are awarded the Media Literacy Certification. Media Literacy Certified educators are experts in teaching students to produce media that matters. Attendees will learn about the process, successes, and challenges to support others in stacking credentials.

Virtual Badge Summit Closing: Reflections and Calls to Action
Thank you to our sponsors and exhibitors! You bring essential knowledge and expert guidance that is shaping the future of this space. And it is only thanks to your support that we are able to present this programming while also keeping registration costs accessible and providing scholarships for colleagues for whom cost is a barrier. Thank you!

We will conclude the Virtual Badge Summit with a closing conversation during which attendees are invited to share your reflections and calls to action.

Also, drawing inspiration from Brent Capriotti and WGU, we have created this "Post-Conference Postcard" template.
We invite you to edit it with your own takeaways and provocations, and to share with us live during this session, as well as on social media. Please use #BadgeSummit so that we can find you! [The link will prompt you to make a copy of a Google Slide that you can then edit to make your own. It contains instructions on how to edit, download, and share.]
